The Kiwanis Club of Elmira was chartered in 1974, and has since grown into a vibrant, involved community service club with approximately 39 members. We raise money through a variety of events, including Maple Syrup Festival, Fish Fries and the Elmira Kiwanis Haus (Oktoberfest).
Some of the worthwhile community causes we support include Trees for Elmira, Woolwich Christmas Goodwill Food Drive, the Santa Claus Parade, the Elmira Kiwanis Music Festival and many more. In the past, we have also funded and built several playgrounds throughout Elmira and the surrounding area.
From 1980 to 2013, we ran Lobsterfest annually at the end of May. It was a mainstay of the club for over 30 years. However it had run its course and the last Lobsterfest was held in May 2013.
From 1998 until 2009, the club ran the Dragon Boat Festival of Waterloo Region at the Laurel Creek Conservation Area. A large portion of the funds from the Dragon Boat Festival went to support the Grand River Hospital's Childbirth programs. Over its run Lobsterfest has contributed over $150,000 to the hospital. Another portion went to the Woolwich Memorial Centre.
Although Kiwanis' focus is children, and particularly children under age of five, our club's unwritten mandate is to support the most worthwhile causes related to any group in our community. As you can see, we have a very active and involved membership!
